Thousands upon thousands of revelers have been camped out on the streets of Manhattan all day in anticipation of the clock striking midnight. A number of celebrity faces are on hand, ranging from Ryan Seacrest, Demi Lovato, and Carrie Underwood to Carson Daly, Kathy Griffin, and Anderson Cooper. But as the night goes on, all eyes will be focused on the sparkling globe in the sky.
This year’s so-called “Time Squares Ball” weighs nearly 12,000 pounds and is made up of 2,688 triangle Waterford Crystals. Set up in a “Gift of Wonder” and “Gift of Imagination” design, the lights behind the crystals can create 16 million different colors. The effect will brighten the New York City sky.
Shortly before the final countdown begins, Jessie J will take the microphone to perform John Lennon’s “Imagine,” continuing a 10-year tradition. When it comes time to push the button, activist Hugh Evans will have the honors of triggering the drop. The live stream broadcast will actually begin at 6 p.m. Eastern, so viewers around the world can have eyes on Time Square all night long. Watch below!
