Mariah Carey addressed her New Year’s Eve performance on Sunday, a full week after her lip syncing fiasco of “Emotions” and “You Belong To Me” in Times Square during “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve With Ryan Seacrest.” The singer posted an audio on Twitter in which she alleged the show’s production team “foiled” her, and that she was “hurt” by it. Carey also defended her decision to lip sync, and noted she was going to “take a break” from social media. Listen to the audio below.
In the 1:40 video, Carey said, “I haven’t really addressed the situation that happened on New Year’s Eve, and in time I will. But for now, I want everyone to know that I came to New Year’s Eve in New York in great spirits, and was looking forward to a celebratory moment with the world.” She added, “It’s a shame that we were put into the hands of a production team with technical issues who chose to capitalize on circumstances beyond our control.”
Carey then tried to explain why she opted to lip sync the two songs. “It’s not practical for a singer to sing live and be able to hear themselves properly in the middle of Times Square with all the noise, the freezing cold, the smoke from the smoke machines, and thousands of people celebrating, especially when their ear monitors were not working properly,” she said. “Listen guys, they foiled me, thus it turned into an opportunity to humiliate me and all those who were excited to ring in the New Year with me. Eventually, I will explain this in greater detail for anyone who cares to hear.”
She continued, “I cannot deny that my feelings are hurt… I’m truly grateful for my fans and my true friends who have been so supportive in this time.” But the singer announced that she’s going to “take a break” from social media while still fulfilling her professional obligations.
“This is an important time for me to finally take a moment for myself, and to be with my loved ones and prepare for my upcoming tour in March,” said Carey. She concluded, “I just want to thank everyone for their support, thank you to all my industry friends and thank you to my Lambs, you’re always there for me. I can’t imagine life without you and you’ll always be a part of me. I can’t wait to sing for you again.”
As Gossip Cop previously reported, two hours after Carey’s disastrous “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” performance (video below), she simply tweeted “S**t happens,” adding, “Have a happy and healthy new year everybody! Here’s to making more headlines in 2017.” During the two-song set, while the track of “Emotions” played, Carey said, “I’m gonna let the audience sing,” adding, “I’m trying to be a good sport here.” And when she tried to sing “We Belong Together,” as Carey walked across the stage, she muttered, “It just don’t get any better.”
In the ensuing days, Carey’s camp pointed the finger at Dick Clark Productions, even alleging they tried to “sabotage” her, a claim they vehemently denied. Hear Carey talking below about the production team having “foiled” her, and why she decided to lip sync during her New Year’s Eve performance.
